Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this report is that so many people travelled down from London that the decision was made to effectively hire a train for the trip.

“Speech Day at Christ’s Hospital. It is 12 years since the famous educational foundation of Christ’s Hospital was removed from Newgate Street to the heart of West Sussex.

“But the historic connection with the City of London is as close as ever. This was once more exemplified on Saturday when the Lord Mayor of London (Sir T. Vansittart Bowater) and the Sheriffs attended in State, journeying with many other guests by special train from Town.”
