“Writing on October 31st to a friend in the West Sussex Constabulary, Constable P.C. Charles D. Rolfe, of Broadbridge Heath who is out at the front with the Royal Field Artillery says: I am pleased to say I am quite well.

“I can shake hands with myself that I am not wounded. We have been well into it since the battle of Mons, so you can take it from me we have seen a good deal of it.

“We have had some very quick moves. We were only five days from the time we left Bulford [Salisbury Plain] until we were in action at Mons.”
