The public were asked to help and provide support for troops on various occasions during the war.

“4th Royal Sussex Regiment. Dear sir, In order to provide some recreation and amusement for the members of the above Battalion during the long winter months an Amusements Committee has been formed, and this Committee is making arrangements to organise indoor games.

“There must be a large number of your readers who have packs of cards, chess and draught sets and boards, dominoes and other table games which are not now in use, and if they would kindly send them to us they will be greatly appreciated. G.W. Flint, Colr Sergt, Secretary Amusements Committee”
