A National Relief Fund was set up early on in the war with Edward, Prince of Wales, as treasurer, to help the families of serving men and those suffering from “industrial distress”.

It’s estimated that around 18,000 charities were created during the war.

“There was an unusually large gathering in the Carfax on Tuesday night, when the Recreation Silver Band gave a special performance on behalf of the Prince of Wales National Relief Fund.

“The usual collections were supplemented on this occasion by two juvenile helpers who between them collected £1 3s.
