As ever, the arrival of a plane caused much excitement in the town.

“At five minutes past four on Wednesday afternoon a new Army biplane with officer and mechanic aboard reached Horsham from a north-westerly direction and made a pretty descent in a meadow near the foot of Bourne Hill.

“‘Shell’ motor spirit agents were in the vicinity and with a fresh supply the airmen started the return jourtney in about half-an-hour. It was a trial trip in beautiful weather.”
