Walking to health

A SIMPLE walk in Horsham designed for people who are ill, very unfit or even in a wheelchair, is looking for more people to take part.

The walk, organised by Horsham District Council, takes an easy stroll from the bandstand in the Carfax, to Horsham Park and then back again – usually stopping off for a coffee halfway round.

Everyone is welcome to the walk, whatever their level of fitness. Current walkers include someone who has osteoporosis and another who has undergone open heart surgery.

Bill Gander leads the walks, which take place every two weeks and leave the bandstand in the Carfax at 10.30am on Wednesdays.

The next walk is Wednesday 13 December.

It was only back in January that Bill started on the walks devised by the local council and as well as benefiting greatly from the walking, he has progressed to being a walks leader.

He said: "I really enjoy walking. I used to walk anyway but I was looking for a bit more of a social side and that's when I found out about these Health Walks.

"They're great fun and you get to meet lots of people. Plus my health has improved greatly and I lost 20 pounds in six months, mostly through walking.

"I'm a qualified walks leader now and it really is very sociable. We meet up, go for a walk and usually stop for a drink afterwards on my longer walks."

He added: "The walk which we do in Horsham Park is good for anyone who wants to get a little exercise, or even get out a bit. It offers the chance of a chat and some fresh air, and anyone can do it. There's no need to book, just turn up, and there will always be someone to walk and talk with.

"Even people on mobility scooters and in wheelchairs are welcome. It's not a difficult walk, but it is enjoyable and you can feel proud of yourself for getting out and about and helping your health."

A full list of walks organised by Horsham District Council is available to download from the Council's website, www.horsham.gov.uk, or can be picked up from the Council offices in North Street, Horsham.
