Shirley takes over

A NEW director of the Horsham and Crawley Samaritans has been appointed.

Shirley Gardner, 58, is an active member of two Horsham choirs; the Pleasure Singers and the Salvation Army Singing Group.

She trained as a programmer and spent the remainder of her working life in IT, recruiting and managing project managers mainly in the insurance business.

Shirley said: "Samaritans provide confidential emotional support for the cost of a local telephone call or, if you would prefer to talk to someone in person then you can drop into the centre in Denne Road, Horsham.

"We are here to listen to whatever you have to say without judging you and will encourage you to explore your feelings and thoughts.

"We are also able to offer talks and tailored training packages to local businesses and schools as well as to other charities. We want to promote good emotional health in whatever way we can."

Shirley moved to Horsham six years ago when she reluctantly had to give up her career due to health problems.

As part of her rehabilitation she decided to give something back by becoming a Samaritan.

After three-and-a-half years as a volunteer in the movement and knowing that she would never be able to go back to full time work, she was delighted to be asked to take on the role of director.

Shirley's main focus will be promoting the Samaritans locally by reaching out to all members of the community.

If you need to contact the Samaritans then ring 01403 276276 or email jo@samaritans.org.

If you want to learn more about becoming a volunteer, you can telephone the above number, drop in at the centre at Denne Road, or look on the website www.samaritans.org/horshamandcrawley.
