Roberto creates a stir among the opera lovers and audiences

WITH the looks and stage presence reminiscent of a young Pavarotti, and a "stupendous" voice to match, the singer Roberto Garcia Lopez is creating a stir among UK opera lovers as well as those attending his solo and oratorio performances.

Now the Argentinian-born performer – whose voice has been described by the critics as "a tenor of raw power", "truly stupendous" and "compelling" – will be making his first appearance in Sussex later this month.

His 'stage' will be the magnificent Barons' Hall at historic Arundel Castle when he sings the role of Cavaradossi in Candelight Opera's performance of Puccini's Tosca – a huge operatic favourite for 100 years – on Tuesday, August 24.

The fully-staged production of this passionate story of love, lust and betrayal promises to be one of the highlights of this year's Arundel Festival, with the Candelight Opera company returning to the town following last year's acclaimed Festival visit.

The company, currently on tour for their 2010 Opera in the House season, specialises in performing in some of the UK's most beautiful houses and historic stately homes and promises audiences a combination of luscious music, beautiful costumes and atmospheric venues.

Their performances in these intimate settings bring audiences physically close to the singers, giving the Arundel Festival-goers an opportunity to experience the full power of Lopez's portrayal of Cavaradossi, which the leading international opera magazine Opera Now has called "lustrous and Pavarottian."

The opera will be conducted by Boris Peck and will also feature the talented young singers Jayne Strand in the title role of Tosca and Jonathan Prentice as the sinister Scarpia.
