REGGAE GIG: Dennis Bovell
ONE OF the UK's most respected and influential reggae musicians comes to Lewes next Saturday (June 13).
Dennis Bovell has an impressive pedigree not only as a longtime collaborator with Linton Kwesi Johnson but also as a producer and sound engineer for a huge variety of bands.
The Barbadian-born Londoner has produced legendary acts I Roy, Steel Pulse, and was at the controls for reggae classic Silly Games by Janet Kay.
His long career started when he was still at school with his first band Road Works Ahead, before forming the group Stonehenge.
In 1970 his next band Matumbi began by backing visiting Jamaican artists including Ken Booth, and went on to become one of Britain's premier reggae bands clocking up a top ten hit Point of View and four albums for EMI.
The end of the 70s saw the formation of the Dub Band, and the beginning of an enduring partnership with reggae poet LKJ which has resulted in acclaimed albums throughout the 80s and beyond.
A quick glance at his MySpace website also reveals ace producer and mixologist Adrian Sherwood as one of friends, so perhaps the founder of the On-U Sound label will soon be working his magic with Dennis in the same way he has with Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
