Pole to Pole latest
THE LATEST manager's update of the Pole to Pole expedition by Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper.
May 4: This week the boys travelled south from Qaanaaq over the Cape Parry headland to an old settlement called Dundas.
Dundas was a small village whose population was relocated when the Americans developed Thule Air Base, as it is known today.
Most of the population went north to Qaanaaq and some south. Today all that remains are a few houses and hunters' huts for short stays.
The sea ice has completely broken up off the headland and it is now quite impossible for Rob and James to carry on with the coastal route.
We are currently exploring inland routes on the ice pack, or heading onto the 'fast' ice south of their current position near Savissivik to rendezvous with Ice Maiden as she sails up from the south.
The rapid change in ice conditions is remarkable – highlighting yet again the huge changes taking place in this fragile environment.
During the week, the boys have been hunting whilst en-route to Dundas with their Inuit friends.
They have experienced first hand the traditional hunting method, watching the hunters shooting seals and fishing through holes in the ice whilst keeping an eye out for Ice Bears!
Ice Maiden is currently at 55.20N / 18.47W sailing at a gentle 5 knots. Her ETA in Disko Bay will be May 16, then she will take up to another eight days to reach the boys around May 24.
