Development in pole plans
THE LATEST manager's update of the Pole to Pole expedition by Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper.
May 10: This last week the boys have been camped at Dundas monitoring sea ice conditions and developing plans for heading south.
New information from hunters further south in Savissivik has now given them the opportunity they need - the fast ice close to the coast is still useable and the boys plan to head south on Monday May 14 to meet Ice Maiden at Upernarvik as originally planned which is great news!
The vast area of sea ice between Greenland and Canada is constantly moving with the prevailing winds and it will be too dangerous for Ice Maiden to head up into that area due to the risk to being trapped and crushed.
During the week the boys have made many friends among the locals at Thule Air Base.
The local police officer however, has not been so friendly and has threatened to arrest the boys for not having a permit to travel in the Thule district!
The fact that the Danish Polar Centre told us and him we didn't need one seems to have done nothing to dampen his mission – they may make their move at night!
Ice Maiden is currently at 58.29N/40.06W sailing at 8 knots. Her ETA in Disko Bay is the May 17, and Upernarvik on May 22. New York City late June!
