Science pioneer and TV star Professor Brian Cox rocketed to a Storrington school to give a mind-blowing space workshop.

Six lucky science and engineering pupils at Rydon Community College were specially selected to take part in the workshop yesterday (Wednesday February 6) led by Professor Cox after the school won a competition organised by The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair.

School children, teachers and parents entered the nationwide competition in their thousands for a chance to see their class scoop the science lesson of a lifetime, but Rydon came out on top.

Headteacher Allison Murphy could not believe it when she heard Rydon had won.

She said: “It was amazing to hear. What a fantastic opportunity. We hope the children feel inspired.”

Also involving other departments, students put together a music piece and designed all the sets and props.

Ten-year-old science and engineer pupil Arthur Pinkney could not contain his excitement.

He said: “It’s my favourite subject. I really like experimenting with Bunsen burners and astrology.”

The workshop was streamed live to around 700 schools across the UK.

Professor Cox said: “I’m here to promote the Big Bang Fair and the big question is how do you go about being a scientist or engineer? And the figures are shocking, we need about a million more in the industry.

“I wanted to be an astronomer as a kid, but I didn’t know how to go about it. I didn’t have clear advice.

“I met the kids here and they’re wonderful - they all want to be scientists or engineers or medical scientists.

“They can be a spacecraft builders - that’s one of our big industries near here.

“I’ve had a brilliant time being a scientist and I’m confident to say you can do this too.”
