SCOUTS from Horsham are spending 24 hours (or longer) cycling to Latvia - without leaving their home town.
The cycle event by 5th/10th Horsham Scout Group starts at 7pm on March 19 at the Scout Hutt in Bennett's Field, Horsham, and ends when they have cycled the 1,500 miles to the Latvian capital Riga.
All the cycling will be by Scouts on exercise bike
s, with some contribution from leaders and helpers, and they aim to raise £1,500 in sponsorship and donations - to match their mileage.
Shoppers can cheer them on their way on March 20 when, after a night's cycling, they move to the Carfax to carry on pedalling between 9am and 4pm.
They return to the Scout Hut afterwards to continue until they reach their target.
"We have chosen Latvia as our destination as we are planning a trip during August to meet up with several Latvian Scout groups for a camping expedition," said Scout leader John Yarlett.
"Our Scout Group has had a link with Scouts in Latvia since 1999.
"During that time, we have developed a strong affection for Latvia and have helped both financially and materially to help Scouting develop in Latvia."
