Splendid day for community
There’s nothing more popular in Cowfold than holding a Village History Day – the last one was four years ago, after which, the Cowfold Village History Society was born.
At our recent village history day, St Peter’s Church had some beautiful silver on show and Jenny Baldwin and her team ran a lively café.
The church was open for people to take in the view from the top of the tower and look at the 10 ft brass of Prior Thomas Nelond.
Leonard Crosbie, chairman of Horsham District Council, kindly opened the event and spent over two hours enjoying the exhibits.
West Sussex Record Office, the Sussex Family History Society, Forever Photographs and stalls organised by village groups were kept busy with enquiries.
As one of the event organisers, I would like to thank all the volunteers, stallholders and sponsors, who contributed to making it such a splendid day.
The proceeds of the day will be shared between the Church Restoration Project and the Village History Society.
The Doctor’s Surgery, manned by Jan Case, had some interesting medical equipment loaned by Dr Philip Allen, including a case containing all that is needed for a ‘home delivery’.
The horticultural society dug up some old garden tools and a lawn mower, while the WI showed off beautiful embroidery and photograph albums that captured events at various dates.
Cowfold Monastery sent a monk’s white habit displayed amid a host of photographs taken by Gerald Penny.
Following a visit to Horsham Museum, Jan Case and Jenny Baldwin decided to transcribe Corporal Bert Ellis’ nearly illegible notebook written in the trenches. This prompted Karen Macauley to research him and discovered that Bert Ellis returned to Cowfold from WWI and died in 1973 and Dr Philip Allen signed his death certificate.
A large display was devoted to Fowler Bros (formed in 1858 and now The Fowler Group). Bernard Cannell had spent many months consulting old ledgers and documents to enable him to illustrate how the company were not only builders, but insurance agents and funeral directors, too.
