'Priorities are party first'
Congratulations to County Councillors Bill Acraman and Peter Griffiths for their generous tribute to defeated County Council candidate Margaret Collins (letters, 12 June).
How gratifying it is to read of someone like Margaret who has "worked tirelessly for her town, county and party (probably in that order) for many years".
This is just what local government service should be, and very definitely not as demonstrated by WSCC leader Henry Smith in his columns carried by the County Times at regular intervals.
Yet again this week he unleashes an unwarranted and totally politically biased diatribe (New Labour's wasted decade) against the considerable achievements of the current government over the years since 1997.
Unfortunately Henry Smith demonstrates the total opposite of Margaret Collins – his priorities are quite clearly party first, with county and town some way in the distance, definitely not what should be looked for in a councillor elected to serve the county of West Sussex, let alone in the position of its leader.
Your leader of the same date suggests that Henry Smith may well become Crawley's next MP, clearly his driving ambition for a long time.
Let us hope that the electorate of the Crawley constituency see some sound common sense at the time of the next General Election and leave Henry Smith where he belongs, trying to serve West Sussex, although we can but hope (maybe forlornly) that his priority in the future might follow that of Margaret Collins, county first, his political party some way behind.
