Financial support for building
I REFER to the article in the County Times regarding the focus on future housing for the district and note that one of the areas being targeted is the land west of Worthing Road in Southwater where there is mention of the provision of a primary school, sports facilities and a secondary school.
A number of years ago when the last fight for Southwater took place by the Southwater Action Group, the offer by the land owner (out of the goodness of his heart) to provide allocated space for a secondary school was put forward.
Many residents at the time were not aware of all the facts and welcomed this proposal without realising the timeframe involved and additional issues such as the transport of students both from and to the village.
At that time I approached the county council to find out who would actually fund the building and of such an establishment. Their answer was basically 'not us, we don't have the money available'.
I could be wrong but, with the additional financial pressures being put on district and county councils today, I doubt very much that this situation has changed? Although perhaps this needs further investigation?
Although the land may be freely available, the financial support for the actual building ultimately isn't. So, the next question is, what would happen to this allocated land if funding for the building of a secondary school isn't available and the surrounding land has already had houses built on it? Oh, now that's a hard one!
