Berkeley and its margins

THE PROPOSED reduction in affordable housing from 40 per cent to 20 per cent was entirely predictable.

In their last half-yearly update released to the stock exchange December 2008, Rob Perrins the finance director of Berkeley Homes said, "one way the company would keep margins high was to refuse to build affordable housing in their developments.

Asked what this would mean for those in need of such housing, he said: "That's the government's problem."
