Oxfam started as The Oxfam Committee for Famine Relief in 1942 in response to the suffering of people in Greece as the result of wartime action.
The appeal raised £10,700 (£370,00 in today’s money) for the Greek Red Cross.
After the war Oxfam continued to work with the massive refugee problem in Europe. One of the earliest ways of helping was with clothing appeals that progressed to the opening of Oxfam shops.
Horsham Oxfam group is proud to have had an Oxfam shop in the town since 1970. The first was in the London Road for a short time and then later moved to premises in East Street. It flourished here until the redevelopment of Piries Place and then in 1986 the shop in the Carfax opened. These have mostly been staffed by volunteers and more are always needed to continue the valuable work.
Oxfam GB works in 55 countries at present responding to the humanitarian needs of 15 million people. So there was lots to celebrate at Oxfam’s 70th birthday party here in Horsham. Ali Jinnah, fundraising manager for the South East, came along and cut the celebratory birthday cake made by volunteer Marguerite Shaw.
Donations on the day made £205 plus items were collected to sell in the shop. Ali Jinnah talked about the history of Oxfam and thanked the supporters for their work and dedication, wishing them many more productive years!
