Jesus of Nazareth was not fabricated in an author’s imagination and many facts concerning His existence are well documented in history. The ultimate test of His existence for me though is that His unique teaching has withstood the test of time for over 2,000 years.

The church to which I have belonged for 27 years is made up of ordinary people, all of whom want to model their lives on, and follow, this extraordinary Jesus. We make no claims about doing so perfectly but we do encourage and support each other in many practical, emotional and spiritual ways.

Crucially, even at the lowest points in our lives Jesus’s teaching never leaves us without hope. Together we learn more of Him and together we endeavour to follow His greatest commandment “to love God, and then to love your neighbour as yourself”. As a direct consequence of this, many are involved in supporting people in need in our town, nationally and around the world.

Last year I was in a team of six people who visited Cambodia Hope Organisation, in order to build a relationship with them so we may support their work in a truly meaningful way. As Christians they rescue and rehabilitate children and families living in desperate circumstances from the fallout of the terrors of the Khmer Rouge period. For me, living in this way far outstrips any model of living which an author could invent.

Some sceptics suggest being a Christian and going to church is ‘all pie in the sky when you die’. Christians could, if so minded, quip back with ‘it is more like having cake on your plate while you wait!’

It’s all about love, actually. Not human love, but experiencing and sharing the love of God. Why not join us?
