A MAN was cut down from a tree in Broadfield last night after he tried to hang himself.

Police and firefighters were called to woodland near Woodmans Hill, Broadfield, at 9.15pm on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services were called following a report of a man threatening to hang himself.

Police sergeant Andy Sanford climbed up to him and was encouraging him out of the tree when the man suddenly jumped.

Sgt Sanford, clinging to a branch with one hand, grabbed the man by his shirt collar, a move that ambulance officers said undoubtedly saved his life.

Firefighters pushed a ladder up under the man and passed Sgt Sanford a knife to cut the rope that was tightening around his neck.

He was then lowered to the ground where he was treated by ambulance personnel and later detained under the Mental Health Act.

Sgt Sanford said: "It feels good to know that my actions helped save his life, that's why I joined the job 14 years ago - to help people."
