THE Army turned out to surprise a war veteran on his landmark birthday.
Ted Belsey welcomed representatives of the 12th Regiment Royal Artillery to his home at Royal Court, Chichester, on his 90th birthday.

Major Andy Wood, second in command and Regimental Sergeant Major, and WO1 (RSM) Lee Chapman surprised Mr Belsey with a specially-made cake.

Major Wood said: "It was quite a humbling experience to visit Mr Belsey and spend some time listening to his 90 years of experiences."

Mr Belsey joined the Gunners before the second world war, going on to serve in Palestine, India, North Africa at the battle of Alem Hamza with 31 Field Artillery Regiment RA on the 25lb field gun.

He continued into Italy and Europe before coming ashore on D-Day. He went on to serve throughout the European campaign until the Rhine Crossings.

The 12th Regiment Royal Artillery has now set up home at Baker Barracks in Thorney Island after moving from Sennelager in Germany.
